Creating psychological safety in our classes starts with embodying safety. Having explored the history of trauma-informed practices and the underlying neurobiology of trauma, we dive deeper into how to cultivate psychological safety in our own bodies. Drawing on the Polyvagal Theory as well as other contemporary models of nervous system regulation, we examine what happens to the brain and organs when we experience shock or prolonged stress, what that might look like in our classrooms and communities, and practices for restoring a sense o safety and social engagement. We will also discuss the effects of trauma across the lifespan and effective strategies for designing trauma-sensitive classes for different age groups. Participants will leave with a toolkit for supporting trauma-survivors, as well as, individuals experiencing chronic stress. This is the second module in a three-part series. Participation in the first module is pre-requisite.
Trauma Sensitive Yoga Training Module 3 of 3
Built upon a foundation of practices that promote psychological safety, we'll explore how to guide students to notice and navigate a broader range of sensations and cultivate resilience. The experience of trauma can impact an individual's ability attune to the body's internal messages resulting in lack of self-regulation and feelings of helplessness. Yoga is shown to empower trauma-survivors by helping them reconnect with these messages and take effective action in caring for themselves on and off the mat. In this two-day training, we'll develop trauma-sensitive yoga sequences that integrate the principles and grounding practices from module two with poses taught in a typical yoga class. The focus will be on teaching to sensation versus appearance, as well as, how to anchor the body and joints in safety to encourage rhythm and self-expression. This is the third module in a three-part series.
