You will leave with a new way of looking at your own bodies and more importantly how to understand and regard yours as a contextual, fascinating thing. For instance instead of just saying "my foot hurts" we want to ask "How? Where? When? In what state? Moving? While in Extension? Flexion? What's going on above your foot and your toes?"

Through hands on learning, discussion and group work you will gain a clear understanding of the connective tissues and facial trains of the body.  We will do this via yoga postures, seated postures and other common postural forms the body my take, in order to explore, and understand just what the body takes to get us through each day.

An Introduction to Breath-Centered Yoga and Demystifying the Bandhas

In this highly interactive, experiential session, Leslie will introduce the distincitive breath-centered teachings of Krishnamacharya and Desikachar from a historical, scholarly and anatomical perspective while leading participants into progressively deeper understanding of the vital forces at work in the human breathing mechanism during yoga practice. Details of breath sequencing, coordination with movement and spinal action are some of the elements that comrpise the topic of bandha. Far from being a mystical practice, the good news is the moment we were immediately, implicitly learning bandhas when we first learned to coordinate breath and body movement. From this perspective, deepening our yoga consists of nothing more than uncovering our innate ability to find support and spaciousness through a breath-centered practice.

2:00-5:00pm
Re-imagining Alignment: Part 1

The first part of Leslie's Re-imagining Alignment begins with an historical and anatomical perspective on the subject and functional definition of alignment followed by an exploration of the uniqueness of human structure. Starting with clear, simple principles that govern musculoskeletal function, Leslie will help you put your asana on a solid foundation literally from the ground up (and from your head down).

Topics include:

  • a historical context for alignment in asana
  • Anatomical definition and principles of alignment
  • The relationship of bandha to support and movement

The Warrior Series - A Hands-Free Vinyasa Practice

If you like a strong, flowing, breath-centered yoga practice, but have done more than a few too many down dogs, updogs and chaturangas, then this is the class for you. This practice -heavy workshop will lead you through a specially designed vinyasa that strongly works legs and moves the spine in all possible directions; all without putting any body weight on your hands. the use of breath cueing to achieve alignment and safety objectives will be covered through exploring individual adaptation and modification for individual therapeutic objectives.

2:00-5:00pm
Re-imagining Alignment: Part 2

Part 2 of Leslie's Re-imagining Alignment relies on students to bring questions about their own asana practice and teaching language. Leslie will promote an experimental, experiential atmosphere of inquiry regarding the teaching of alignment, safety and effective cueing of asana

  • Why Instructions like "tuck your tail, lengthen your spine, square your hips" maybe doing more harm than good, and what kind of language to use instead
  • Breath-centered, anatomically-based cueing
  • The use of Gazing (drishti) and imagery to foster increased neuromuscular integration

Much of yoga teacher's anatomy studies include the building blocks: the individual muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. While this is instructive and necssary, it is difficult to show students how they are part of the whole.

When put in context of fascial lines, however, our anatomy and practice come to life. This series illustrates how students can connect the dots of felt sense and experience wholeness in their practice.

The lateral line portion explores the “body brackets” and left-to-right asymmetry. We'll investigate twists and allows the organic body to receive the benefits of the practice through the spiral line. The dorsal line session addresses back body, which includes the densest and strongest tendons in our system. The ventral and core lines session explores anatomical backbends and metaphorically opens possibilities. It then puts it all the lines together and explores our sense of self through stability and inversion.

Richard explains how these lines course through the body from head to toe. He then will lead a focused fascial practice to explore the lines in a logical way. We will also speak about the Yoga Sutras and explore ways the sutras are integrated like our connective tissue, fostering an understanding and appreciation of the text. There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion and questions. Bring your curiousity, something to write with and your sense of exploration.

Yoga alliance members receive 10 Continuing Education Credits.

About Richard
Richard's style is paradoxically both unique and universal. His instructions allow for any student to approach the practice, embracing all levels of experience and ability. This allows for anybody to explore their own unique structure and make every practice their own. Richard's approach is influenced by his primary teacher, Tias Little. Tias developed Prajna Yoga, which means 'the yoga of deep insight.' Tias describes Prajna Yoga as a 'style-less style', where the yoga should fit the student and not the other way around.

For Richard, this 'style-less style' means a yoga practice should be vibrant, in-the-moment and multi-disciplinary. His teachings fuse traditional posture and breathwork with contemporary anatomy and body work. He draws from many forms of yoga, fascial release, mindfulness techniques and common sense.

I have been teaching yoga and other forms of fitness for over 20 years.  Prior to yoga, I worked in the financial markets of corporate America.  Life in corporate America was 7 days a week, 18 hours a day without pause.  Once I had children, I wanted to change direction and step into a world that I could be with my children, have a healthy lifestyle and discover my purpose in this world. I wanted to make a difference by sharing the things I loved most; family, community and healthy living.

Through many marathons as well as watching my own mother struggle with MS, I started to realize the systems of the body and mind needed moments of recovery, strengthening and stability outside the normal routines.  I discovered yoga in 2004 and my whole way of being shifted. From that point, I wanted to discover everything I could about yoga, meditation, anatomy, breath and how they supported the body and mind.

The Essential Workshop is a four-part series comprised of these topics:

Shoulders (Saturday 9:30am-12:30pm) — The shoulder girdle is a common area of struggle for both the new and the regular practitioner. The shoulder joints are inherently inclined toward mobility, creating the need to cultivate stability when we challenge the joints in weight-bearing poses like chaturanga dandasana. In a lecture, we’ll learn about the shoulder anatomy and a theoretical approach to working with these joints therapeutically before moving into a guided practice that enables you to immediately translate this knowledge into your body.

Hips (Saturday 2pm-5pm)— This workshop explores the need for equity between stability and mobility in the hip joint. In a yoga practice, hip stability occurs naturally but what each of us needs to maintain balance in this joint can vary greatly from person to person. Through a lecture and guided practice, you’ll look at the structure and function of the hip joint to learn how to individualize for your practice and group classes.

Spine (Sunday 9:30am - 12:30pm) — The central theme of this workshop is maintaining the integrity of the precious structures in the spine and all that it entails. Learning how to move efficiently with the support of the core, glutes, and legs is key not just in a movement practice but also in the challenges of our lives. Through a combination of theory and practice, you’ll understand how the parts of the spine work together with the core and legs, and learn how to move with solid mechanics that allow you to rewrite your autopilot motions.

Myofascial Release (Sunday 2pm-5pm) — Understand what myofascial release (MFR) is and how it supplements your yoga practice. We’ll move through a MFR practice that explores the areas we’ve found to be the most beneficial for the legs, hips, shoulders, and back. You will leave with self-care information that you can use right away. This practice is MFR only (no yoga) and is open to everyone, no yoga experience needed.

I began practicing at SPY in 2009 when we first opened, did my 200 hour training about 2 years later, and completed my 300 hour training in 2019. I help facilitate the yin and restorative modules of the 200 RYT programs and am part of the 300 RYT teaching team. In addition to my 200 and 300 hour trainings, I've taken weekend immersions and workshops in yin and restorative yoga and in 2017 completed a 50 hour Yin Yoga Training in Vancouver with Bernie Clark.

When I'm not teaching yoga, I'm teaching 4th grade language arts. I love bringing yoga into the classroom and sharing it with my students and the staff at my school. For my 300 hour training I developed a program for 9-12 year olds based on Baptiste's 40 Day Programs that also incorporated skills kids can use to respond to bullying situations.

I was introduced to yoga as a way to reward my body for how I was treating it during the week. I was hooked after my first Yin class and immediately fell in love with the Baptiste Methodology of the practice. I discovered yoga was not a fitness class but a practice that altered my life physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

I was making a living in the corporate world but it was unfulfilling. I knew something more was around the corner but I didn't know what.

My 200 Hour YTT invoked my passion for anatomy and physiology and I yearned for additional understanding of how the body works within myself. Six months later, I found myself enrolled in school to become a LMT.

I realized my purpose in life is to be of servie to others through the introduction of mindfulness, relaxation techniques and yoga to teens and by providing clinical massage therapy that is practical and affordable.

My classes are simple and light-hearted, infused with many modalities including Massage and Myofascial Release. I am known for being an anatomy nerd. I believe yoga is for everybody and every body. You can expect to flow, breath + rest oh so deeply.

I’ve been practicing yoga since 2011 and it has been one of the greatest gifts of my life.  As someone who has always gravitated toward teaching, I immediately had the desire to share what I was experiencing and receiving from yoga with others.  I completed my 200 RYT training in 2014 and my 300 RYT training in 2017. Since then I’ve had the privilege of teaching over 1500 hours of yoga to students of all ability and experience levels in both public and private classes.

In January 2017 I helped create Simply Power Yoga’s “Yoga 101” workshops, which have since become Yoga 101 classes that are offered every week at SPY.

In April 2017 I began working with several elite gymnasts and have since worked with hundreds of elite, competitive and recreational gymnasts from all over the United States, parts of Canada and the UK.  I’m currently working with teen gymnasts in partnership with USA Gymnastics incorporating yoga, meditation and relaxation techniques into their stressful and intense training schedules.

In October 2017 I participated in a ‘Yoga for Seniors’ training and began working with senior citizens, helping them improve their strength, balance and mental focus.

I’ve had the unique opportunity to volunteer with the youth at the Warren County Juvenile Detention center, helping them experience the difference yoga can make in their lives.

In addition to Yoga for Seniors, I’ve participated in trainings for Yin Yoga, Trauma Sensitive Yoga, Yoga for Anatomy/Breath and Assisting.  I continually seek out books, online resources, and podcasts offered by experts in the fields of breath, meditation, anatomy, specialty yoga, restorative yoga and more.

For the last several years I’ve contributed to the 200 and 300 RYT trainings at Simply Power Yoga, facilitating practice teaching, Yoga History/Philosophy and Sequencing/Transitioning sessions.  I also participate on the teaching/assisting team at the annual Nemacolin Woodlands Resort yoga retreat and am currently facilitating Baron Baptiste’s 40 Days to Personal Revolution program.
